USAG Stuttgart’s Directorate of Human Resources is hosting a VA Beneifits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) informational workshop on Panzer Kaserne, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Interested personnel can email their name and DoD ID Number to GermanyBDD.vbapit@va.gov.
If you are planning for retirement, transitioning out military, or even just kicking around the idea of getting off of active duty, please pay close attention. This also applies to transitioning Service Members, including Reservist and Guard Members on Title 10 or Title 32 Orders.
You (spouses are welcome to attend as well) are strongly encouraged to attend the upcoming in-person VA BDD informational workshop, hosted by Phyllis Barnes, OIC, Department of Veterans Affairs BDD Intake Site, and the Germany BDD Intake Office.
Why You Cannot Afford to Miss the BDD Window: Historical trends and VA workload report consistently indicate that the vast majority of veterans miss the pre-separation window and must file after discharge. Missing this critical 180-to-90-day pre-separation window drastically increases the time it takes to receive your benefits and shifts the burden of proof heavily onto you.
The differences between filing before you take off the uniform versus waiting until after are stark:

| Speed of Processing | Often receive your rating decision and compensation within 30 days of discharge. | Average claim currently takes 140 to 150 days to complete (a 5-month delay). |
| Burden of Proof | Much Easier. Because you are on active duty, diagnosed conditions are inherently treated as occurring during service. | Difficult. You must legally prove a “nexus” (medical link) to your service, often requiring archived records and private medical opinions. |
| C&P Medical Exams | Completed while on active duty, with command support to attend appointments. | Must take time off from your new civilian job/schooling and may have to travel far to a VA facility. |
| Financial Security | Secures a predictable, tax-free income stream exactly when you lose your active-duty paycheck. | High financial stress during transition due to gaps in income. |
Utilizing the BDD program is a critical transition requirement to protect your health and financial security.
