EUCOM at 70: Craig Family Housing

By USAG Public Affairs and the EUCOM Historian’s Office

Did you know many of the buildings and housing areas across U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart are memorialized after Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who served with distinction during our nation’s conflicts.

The Craig Family Housing area between Montana Strasse and the Swabian Special Events Center on Patch Barracks is one of those sites. Constructed in the early 1950s, the housing area was named after 2nd Lt. Robert Craig, a platoon leader with the 3rd Infantry Division, who seventy-nine years ago on July 11, 1943 gave his life while eliminating an Italian machine gun nest and driving off 100 men during Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily.

Craig’s heroic actions allowed his platoon to overtake the Italian position on the Sicilian ridge line. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor, May 26, 1944.
