Sweets and treats have donned commissary shelves since January, but Valentine’s Day hasn’t quite expanded throughout our host nation in the same way. Whether it’s your first or 15th holiday in Germany, there are a few differences you may notice between how the holiday is celebrated here.
Originally derived from a pagan festival called Lupercalia, today’s Valentine’s Day came to be when pagan customs were mixed with the Christian feast of Saint Valentine. Many saints named Valentine are thought to be connected to the holiday, but the holiday’s association with love can be traced back to 14th and 15th century England. It really only started appearing in Germany in the 1950s as United States and British soldiers brought the traditions into the country.
While Valentine’s Day is now celebrated by all ages and in all places as a (sometimes commercial) show of love, celebrations in Germany are much more lowkey. You won’t find German classmates swapping boxes and boxes of Valentine’s Day cards in school or greeting cards directed at every acquaintance you’ve ever met. While there are some gift baskets, cards, and small treats available in local stores closer to mid-February, if it’s celebrated at all the holiday locally really only involves significant others going out to dinner or exchanging small gifts (make sure to book those dinner reservations early). Locally in Baden-Württemberg, couples can gain free entry to 10 different sites managed by the state offices for Palaces and Gardens for the price of a kiss, including two sites in the Stuttgart area.
Luckily, there are many events across our installations to help USAG Stuttgart citizens of all ages celebrate. Being far from home this year doesn’t mean you have to go without. Here are a few on-post Valentine’s Day celebrations to take part in this Valentine’s Day.

Middle school and high school students looking to avoid the traditional Valentine’s Day cliches this year can join others at the Patch Library to zombify Barbie and Ken with paint, glitter, and other decorative materials.
