The application process opened April 4 for the 2016 U.S. Army Garrison Summer Hire Program.

The Summer Hire Program is for student’s ages 14 to 22 who are family members of an active duty service member that want to get experience working in a professional environment at U.S. Army Garrison.

Participants must be 14 by the start of the program and not turn 23 by the end of it. In addition to being a paid student work program, participants have the opportunity to gain useful knowledge and experience in a real world environment.

As a Summer Hire, participants are treated just like their adult coworkers. Summer Hires must maintain a 40 hour a week work, track sick time, and know workplace safety. They also must submit status reports to supervisors and approve hours with a time keeper.

Previous participants recommend the program because it prepares students for “real jobs, “according to Julia Lockridge, a 2015 Summer Hire participant. Useful skills participants gain include self-discipline, teamwork, and confidence in a working environment.

There were 17 students placed last year, seniors who are college bound generally have first priority. The amount of slots available this year is still to be determined. Some jobs that were available last year included the Patch Postal Service, Patch Fitness Center, and the Department of Human Resources.

To apply for the 2016 Summer Hire Program, students need to complete an automated online application. All applications must be received no later than midnight Central European Time (CET), April 15.

The program runs from June 27 to Aug. 5, selected participants attend a group orientation on the first day.

Two types of categories for positions are available:
1. Clerical: May include typing, computer work, filing, receptionist work, customer service and answering telephones.
2. 2. Labor: May include working indoors/outdoors, light to moderate lifting, and yard work.
