STUTTGART, Germany – U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart and host nation officials responded to an incident at Patch Middle School around 11:30 a.m. yesterday morning, April 28.

The school evacuated one portable classroom after students reported symptoms including coughing, eye irritation, and headaches. USAG Stuttgart Fire Department and host nation police, fire, and medical personnel responded swiftly to the scene, and the German Red Cross evaluated and medically cleared the 16 students and one teacher onsite.

Air and surface testing was conducted using specialized chemical detection equipment, and no chemical irritants were found. The affected classroom was deemed safe for reentry but remained unused for the rest of the school day out of an abundance of caution, according to school officials. Instruction continued as scheduled.

“We are incredibly grateful for the rapid and professional support provided by our host nation colleagues,” said Edgar Otalora, USAG Stuttgart’s director of emergency services. “This text-book response highlights the strong partnership we have with our German counterparts and our shared commitment to the safety of our military community.”

Patch Middle School families may reach out to the school administration directly with any further questions or concerns. Questions related to emergency response may be directed to the USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs Office at usagstuttgartpao@army.mil.
