ADAC warns of traffic jams for the May Day weekend
The ADAC Württemberg anticipates significant traffic jams on the highways in southwest Germany, especially leading up to the public holiday May 1. The automobile club has already identified the worst day. Thursday April 30, traffic is expected to move very slowly on during the afternoon,” warns Joachim Baumhauer, traffic advisor at ADAC Württemberg. According to the ADAC, travelers should be particularly careful on the A8 between Karlsruhe and Ulm – specifically on the Alb ascent between Aichelberg and Merklingen, “traffic jams are almost guaranteed here on Thursday.”
The risk of congestion will also be high on Friday morning. According to the ACE, this also applies to secondary roads, which could see heavy traffic from people heading to festivals, hiking destinations, and May Day events.
“May Day demonstrations could lead to local road closures in city centers,” the ACE adds.
Raising of the Maypole in the Böblingen Districts
Since medieval times, decorated trees have symbolized spring, new life, and fertility.
In the Böblingen, Sindelfingen, Schönaich, and Waldenbuch region, the raising of the Maypole is traditionally celebrated either on April 30 or May 1 with festive gatherings (known locally as *Hocketse*).
Here are the details, based on information for 2025/2026:
- Waldenbuch
April 30 at 4:30 p.m. at the *Aichterrassen*.
Details: Food and refreshments usually begin earlier (starting around 3:00 p.m.).
- Sindelfingen
April 30
Location: Wettbachplatz.
The Maypole decoration ceremony—followed by the traditional “Dance into May” (*Tanz in den Mai*)—traditionally begins around 6:00 p.m., often accompanied by the City Band and live music. A May Day gathering (*Maihocketse*) usually takes place on May 1st.
- Schönaich
April 30.
Details: The Music Association or the Handball Club (TSV) hosts a May Day gathering. The raising of the tree traditionally takes place on the eve of May 1st.
- Böblingen
When: April 30
At the Böblingen Boathouse followed by a traditional morning get-together on May 1 (*Frühschoppen*).
Gathering in Weil der Stadt the Fanfare Band will raise the Maypole in the market square on May 1, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Bridge renovation in Weilimdorf B 295 entrance closed for four weeks:
Detours for drivers the regional government is renovating a bridge over the federal highway until mid-June. The official detour is four kilometers long. Traffic jams are also expected on alternative routes. Drivers in Stuttgart-Weilimdorf should expect traffic disruptions starting Monday, May 4. Until Friday, May 29, the entrance to the B295 towards Ditzingen will be completely closed at the Rastatter Straße light rail station.
