Road closures due to A81 expansion: How is it going to affect drivers in Sindelfingen/Böblingen?
The major construction for the extension of the A81 reaches its climax this summer. The bridge in Wolfgang-Brumme-Allee/Rudolf-Diesel- Straße at Motorworld will be the last bridge over the A81 to fall. Demolition is scheduled for the second weekend in August. A temporary bridge will serve as a replacement, which traffic will be able to use beginning on August 4. Following the demolition, a new, longer bridge will be built over the A81 at the same location.
Preparations for this are already underway. Since Monday, the right-hand lane in Brumme-Allee in the direction of Böblingen has been closed as the connections for the temporary road link are being made. As the replacement bridge is being lifted into place and the existing one demolished, this also means closures, detour and restrictions.
Here is an overview:
July 17 to July 18: Nighttime closure of the A81 in the direction of Stuttgart between the Böblingen-Hulb and Sindelfingen-Ost junctions for a foundation for the central support in the bridge area to be installed.. The closure begins on Thursday evening at 10 p.m. and ends the following morning at 5 a.m. Traffic in the direction of Singen is not affected.
July 25 to 27: Closure of the A81 in both directions between the Sindelfingen-Ost and Böblingen-Hulb junctions. The closure begins on Friday evening at 10 p.m. and lasts until Sunday morning at 5 a.m. while the temporary bridge on Wolfgang-Brumme-Allee is lifted into place.
August 8 to 11: Closure of the A81 in both directions between the Böblingen-Hulb and Sindelfingen-Ost junctions. The closure begins on Friday evening at 10 p.m. and ends on Monday morning at 5 a.m. for the bridge over the highway in Wolfgang- Brumme-Allee to be demolished.
During the A81 closure, Autobahn traffic will be routed through Sindelfingen. From the Sindelfingen-Ost junction, it will go via Mahdentalstraße, Neckarstraße, Calwer Straße and B464 to the Böblingen-Hulb junction and vice versa.
Of a total of twelve bridges, 10 have now been completed or are currently under construction, project manager Johannes Kuhn is quoted in a Deges press release. Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH is planning and coordinating the six-lane expansion of the A81 between the Böblingen-Hulb and Sindelfingen-Ost junctions. “Work on the route and the overlay is progressing and the new junction concept is also taking shape,” says Kuhn.
On-ramp to Stuttgart will be closed
The junctions are being restructured. Sindelfingen-Ost will be downgraded to a semi- junction: It will lose the ramps into and out of the direction of Singen. Work will initially be carried out on the southern side, affecting the exit from Singen, which is already closed, and the slip road towards Stuttgart, which will be closed next. At the moment, traffic between Sindelfingen-Ost and the Stuttgart junction is moving on the outside of the A81 because a canal is being built in the middle. This will soon be finished. Beginning July 21, all highway traffic in this area is expected to be shifted to the northbound lane, i.e. the one on the Sindelfingen side. Two lanes will then be available in each direction. There will also be an exit lane for those coming from Stuttgart at Sindelfingen-Ost.
An overview of the restrictions and closures at Sifi-Ost:
Beginning July 17: Overnight traffic restrictions are to be expected due to preparations for the relocation of traffic The slip road onto the A81 in the direction of Stuttgart at the Sindelfingen-Ost junction will be closed. This will take place in the night from July 18 to 19. From this point onwards, traffic will have to divert to the Böblingen-Ost or Böblingen-Sindelfingen junctions. It is expected that it will be possible to use the slip road to Stuttgart at Sindelfingen-Ost again in the summer of 2026. (Sindelfinger Zeitung/BB Zeitung, July 10)
