After State election in Southwest Germany Exploratory talks between Greens and CDU appear likely

Ten days after the State election in Baden-Württemberg, there are signs of movement in the formation of a new State government. According to dpa information, the Greens and CDU are discussing the possibility of starting exploratory talks to explore continuing their coalition government. Neither party would initially confirm the talks. The Greens and CDU have been governing together in Baden-Württemberg since 2016. In the State election on March 8, the Greens narrowly emerged as the strongest party with 30.2 percent of the vote, closely followed by the CDU with 29.7 percent. However, both parties hold 56 seats each in the new state parliament – an unusual stalemate. A continuation of the Green-Black coalition is currently considered the only realistic option for forming a government. The CDU categorically rules out any cooperation with the AfD.
