Weather in Baden-Württemberg up to 20 degrees but thunderstorms and heavy rain

Anyone traveling in southwest Germany today should keep an eye on the sky:

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), there is a slight risk of isolated thunderstorms with heavy rain in the Black Forest and the Swabian Alps this afternoon. Up to 15 liters of rain per square meter could fall within an hour.

Besides high clouds, the sun should occasionally break through the clouds during the day. However, clouds could form, especially over the mountains, from which isolated showers are expected to develop starting in the afternoon.

According to the forecast, temperatures will reach highs between 13 and 19 degrees celsius.

Overnight into Wednesday, more clouds are expected to move in, with showers possible in some areas. Lows are forecast to range between 3 and 8 degrees celsius. Strong to gale-force gusts from the southwest are also expected in the higher elevations of the Black Forest.

Wednesday will be partly to mostly cloudy with isolated showers. Rain may begin from the northwest in the late afternoon. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), temperatures will reach around 10 degrees celsius in the mountains and up to 17 degrees celsius in the Rhine Valley.

Nighttime frost is possible in some areas. On Thursday, the rain may persist initially before clearing up and becoming more pleasant during the day. Highs are expected to range between 10 degrees celsius in the mountains and 16 degrees celsius in the Ortenau region. Winds will be light to moderate with occasional gusts.

On Friday night, frost is again possible in some areas: Lows are forecast to drop to minus 1 degree celsius, according to the weather service. Strong gusts are possible on the peaks of the Black Forest.

State Election 2026: Stalemate in the State Parliament

The Greens won the state election, but their narrow lead of 27,000 votes (0.5 percentage points) will not affect the number of seats they hold. Like the CDU, the Greens will have 56 seats in the new state parliament. This de facto stalemate could complicate coalition negotiations, says Freiburg political scientist Michael Wehner.

As election night progressed, the Greens’ initially projected lead dwindled. The CDU even held a significant lead in the first-past-the-post votes for constituency candidates. They were only able to retain their direct mandates in their strongholds – the state capital and the university towns.

Wehner doesn’t believe that the CDU’s lead candidate, Manuel Hagel, will be able to successfully claim the office of Minister-President with these arguments.

“Given the current dynamics, he will hardly be able to deny Cem Özdemir the victory,” Wehner said.

As a general rule, there is no automatic process whereby the party with the most second votes provides the Minister-President. Everything is a matter of negotiation.

In 2011, Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) was able to be elected Minister-President of a Green-Red coalition, even though the incumbent, Stefan Mappus, and his CDU had received more than 10 percentage points more. The first Minister-President in the history of Baden-Württemberg, Reinhold Maier (FDP), was even elected with his own party’s share of the vote of only 18 percent.

However, this is contingent on finding coalition partners who can secure the necessary majority for the candidate in the state parliament. The CDU currently lacks this majority. Mathematically, the only viable option is cooperation with the AfD.

“Markus Frohnmaier has already made overtures,” said Wehner. Hagel, however, categorically ruled this out. Withdrawing the coalition would “completely shatter the CDU’s credibility,” Wehner stated.
