Dangerous situation in Stuttgart-Vaihingen – Construction site sign covers traffic light

It happened now twice already.  When the Lichius family wanted to cross the main street in Stuttgart-Vaihingen with their three children at the height of the Aral gas station, the  pedestrian lights there showed green. And then the near-misfortune happened: “Our six-year-old son was almost run over by a car driver who did not stop despite the red light for the cars. Of course, everyone suffered a great fright, especially since 50 kilometers per hour are permitted at this point and an accident would have had fatal consequences,” Matthias Lichius describes the first incident.  Just a few days later, he says, a very similar situation occurred. “We couldn’t explain it at first,” says Matthias Lichius. Until a few days ago, when he was driving on the main road himself. He noticed that “one side of the traffic light is completely covered by a large construction site sign placed in front of it. It only becomes visible again immediately before the traffic light is reached,” says Matthias Lichius. Although there was a second traffic light in the middle of the lane that was not covered, “it was clearly not enough to make drivers aware that they had a red light.”  Matthias Lichius has written to Stuttgart’s public order office with an urgent request to defuse the situation as soon as possible. “Otherwise, it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident because of a hidden red light,” his letter to the office says.  The city of Stuttgart has also already reacted: “The road traffic authority has contacted the contracted traffic safety company to have the sign implemented. The detour sign is now to be placed at the height of the gas station exit on the center island,” it says in a written statement Tuesday. The reason for the construction site is the renovation of the bridge over the A 831 by the Autobahn GmbH of the federal government.  This should have settled the matter. But it is not. At least on Wednesday evening, the sign still covered the traffic light. The danger has not yet been eliminated, says Matthias Lichius.  (Filder Zeitung, July 7, 2022)

Festival starts in Stuttgart “Jazz Open”

The new rule in the idyll of the Old Castle and on the Schlossplatz is: “Cashless only”. According to the organizer, saying goodbye to coins and bills will lead to “time savings at the cash desks,” make the visit more flexible and, on top of that, be more hygienic. It will be a festival à la carte. Stuttgart wants to be a role model not only in the choice of music. At the European Top 3 meeting for Jazz & Beyond, payment will be made with a debit or credit card – you can leave your wallet at home. Finally, one of the main sponsors is a payment service provider. Those who have the Mastercard – to show who is one of the backers of the Jazz Open – will receive a 20 percent discount on food and drink. If there are still people without a card or someone has forgotten it: At the merchandising stands there’s from the festival start with Herbie Hancock (this Thursday Old Castle) to the finale with Sting (on July 17 on the Schlossplatz) contactless wristbands with a credit of 20 euros, which you can still cash. If you register the bracelet in the app and link it to an account, you can recharge it. Extended staff wants to clarify questions about payment.  In addition to the 40,000 visitors who have already bought tickets, 10,000 are expected at the admission-free stages of the “Open Stage.” Those who want to experience the special atmosphere of the Jazz Open, this tingling enthusiasm to which audience and artists unite in front of a dreamlike castle backdrop on Stuttgart’s most beautiful square, can still get tickets for some evenings – but most concerts are already sold out. Places are available, for example, for July 12, for the “Magic Jazznight” with Gregory Porter, Al Di Meola, David Sanborn and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and for Celeste, Jorja Smith, Suzanne Vega on July 14. Remaining tickets are available for Jamie Cullum (July 13), Stuttgart crowd favorite John Legend/Jessie (July 15), on Schlossplatz, and Joe Jackson (July 8) in the courtyard of the Altes Schloss.  For more information, visit the website: www.jazzopen.com  (Stuttgarter Nachrichten, July 7)
