German states report 970 new infections, incidence increases
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports 970 new positive tests. This is 78 more than a week ago Thursday, when 892 new infections were recorded. The seven-day incidence rises to 5.2 from 5.1 the previous day. This brings the total number of reported deaths within 24 hours to 91,141. In total, more than 3.7 million corona tests have been positive in Germany so far.(Robert Koch institute, July 8)

Pharmacies offer digital vaccination certificates for recovered patients
From this Friday on, digital vaccination certificates will also be available in pharmacies for recovered patients who have received a supplementary vaccination. The necessary technical solution has now been implemented, according to the German Pharmacists Association. More than 20 million vaccination certificates have already been issued via the pharmacies’ system, says Chairman Thomas Dittrich. (Ntv, July 8)

Family doctor receives death threats after vaccinating children
Since a family doctor’s practice in Neu-Ulm has been offering the Corona vaccination to children, the staff have been regularly receiving death threats.

The doctor in charge justifies the vaccination with studies from the USA, which show that the positive effects clearly outweigh the disadvantages. In the United States, millions of children have already received vaccinations. The STIKO is still holding back with a recommendation for those under 20.(Ntv, July 8)

Nuclear Power Plant in Neckarwestheim safety inspection
During the annual safety inspection at Unit II of the Neckarwestheim nuclear power plant (Heilbronn district), 17 new cracks were found on pipes. “The number of safety-relevant findings is thus about 0.6 per mille higher than in the previous year and again significantly below the level of 2018 and 2019,” the Baden-Württemberg Environment Ministry classified on Thursday. Also, the new cracks are significantly shorter and less deep, it said. From the ministry’s point of view, the safety measures introduced are taking effect. Opponents of nuclear power are nevertheless outraged that the power plant is going back online.

In 2018, cracks were discovered for the first time in some of the approximately 16,400 heating pipes of the four steam generators. However, there have never been any leaks because of this, the ministry said. And even in the event of an accident, the pipes would have withstood the stresses. The operator EnBW had sealed the affected pipes according to a proven rehabilitation concept.

Just over a month ago, unit two – the last EnBW nuclear reactor still in operation – was taken off the grid for a so-called overhaul.  Among other things, fuel elements in the pressurized water reactor, which went into operation in 1989, are being replaced. Unit II will generate electricity until the end of 2022 at the most, when it will be shut down as a result of the nuclear phase-out. Rapid dismantling is planned.

Opponents of nuclear power are demanding that the reactor be shut down more quickly. The initiative “ausgestrahlt” and the Association of Citizens’ Initiatives Mittlerer Neckar (BBMN) have filed an urgent application with the Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg. They commissioned an expert opinion, according to which there could be a threat of pipe bursts.(Canstatter Zeitung, July 8)
