More than 150 million vaccination doses administered in Germany in total

The pace of German vaccination efforts is not yet recovering after Christmas and New Year. At the start of the week, 226,582 vaccine doses were administered nationwide, according to official vaccination rate monitoring, significantly fewer than the daily average before Christmas. The multi-day average fell to just under 345,000 vaccine doses per day. Nevertheless, Germany exceeds the mark of 150 million doses vaccinated since the end of December 2020. Booster vaccinations continue to claim the lion’s share of vaccine doses used. Of the approximately 226,500 vaccinations administered on Jan. 3, only 17,976 were first-time vaccinations, with about 27,000 people receiving their second dose. According to the report, four out of five vaccine doses administered are booster vaccinations. (Ntv, January 4)

More than one in five PCR tests positive – highest value since the start of the pandemic

As expected, significantly fewer PCR tests are carried out around the turn of the year than in the previous week: the laboratory association ALM e.V. reports 897,803 tested samples in calendar week 52 (27.12. to 02.01.2022). In each of the nine preceding weeks, significantly more than one million tests had been performed. The positive rate currently makes a set of 16.41 to just under 22 percent – more than every fifth swab leads to a positive result in the past week. In absolute numbers these are 196,528 proven infections. In the previous week (week 51 from 20.-26.12.21), 192,428 infections were detected in significantly more samples taken.(Ntv, January 4)

Number of vacant ICU beds shrinks significantly

The number of free intensive care beds in German hospitals is currently continuing to decline rapidly. 21,042 operable intensive care beds (including necessary staff) are currently occupied. This is 357 more than the previous day. Thus, the ratio of free intensive care beds decreases from 16.4 to 15.5 percent. Covid patients do not currently contribute to the sharp increase in the number of intensive care patients. 3670 of them are currently in an intensive care bed. That is 133 fewer than the previous day. 2176 need additional ventilation. Their number decreases by 41 compared to Monday. (Spiegel, January 4)
